Act now for Mumia Abu-Jamal
By Henry Hagins

On July 4, the apparatus of state power, like it does every year, arrogantly lauded itself for its alleged mandate to occupy the “lighthouse of democracy” around the world. Drunk on the brew of grand larceny, they will never voluntarily imbibe the sobering elixir of Frederick Douglass’ unforgettable Fourth of July speech in 1853, in which he soundly revoked U.S. claims to such authority.

Douglass’ “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” speech could have been minted today, at a time when U.S. imperialism’s wars pockmark the entire planet; when over 2.4 million prisoners, including about a million African Americans, languish and toil in slave-like conditions in U.S. prisons and jails.

Just look at the obscene cat-and-mouse game — a war by all levels of the state of Pennsylvania — that is meant to torment political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal and induce his demise, this time through outright medical abuse and neglect.
The assault on Abu-Jamal’s health has been going on for well over six months. The alleged recovery prescription is Swiss-cheesed with gaping holes, contradictions and medical inaction.

On June 29, Suzanne Ross of the Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Coalition (NYC) and International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal, and Mumia’s brother, Keith Cook, visited the ailing Mumia. Their observations can be found at

Mumia and Wadiya Abu-Jamal

Bottom line: Abu-Jamal’s health is not good.

His skin condition offers great discomfort that hardly reflects healing.

We must pull out the stops again to protect Mumia’s health and ultimately bring him home! Heat up the grapevine. Call friends, family, activists, influential people and organizations, etc. The time to act is surely now!

Mumia is innocent of all the charges against him and should never have been arrested. In the hands of the prison system, he has come extremely close to dying; continued medical neglect and abuse make this a constant threat.

He should be released to receive proper outside medical care. Call Secretary John Wetzel, Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, at 717-728-4109 and Pennsylvania Governor Thomas Wolf, at 717-787-2500, to demand that Mumia Abu-Jamal be granted treatment by specialists of his choosing who are outside the Department of Corrections and that he get an appropriate diet and daily visits by family, friends and attorneys.

- U R G E N T - April 25 Update -
Calls Again Needed to Save Mumia's Life!
Stop the attempted murder of Mumia
through medical neglect!

-Keep the pressure on!-
Mumia's Condition Grave
Take Action NOW!

On Friday, April 24, Mumia Abu-Jamal was visited by his spouse, Wadiya Jamal, who reported that his condition has worsened. She saw him again today and he appears even more gravely ill. Everyone is asked to call the prison and the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections immediately. If they hang up, call again. Please continue to call on Sunday, Monday and throughout the coming week.

Mumia was released from the prison infirmary three days ago even though he was in no condition to be in general population. His request to be seen by independent medical specialists was denied by the PA Department of Corrections. Yet he is in need of 24-hour care and supervision. He is too weak and in this state he may not be able ask for help. He may lose consciousness.

This is what happened before he was rushed to the hospital on March 30 when another prisoner, Major George Tillery, complained to the guards that Mumia needed immediate medical attention. In retaliation the prison moved Tillery to another unit.

Mumia has severe swelling in his neck, chest and legs. His skin rash is worse than ever with open sores. No longer in a wheelchair, he can only take baby steps. He was nodding off during the visits with his wife and unable to feed himself. These are symptoms that could be associated with hyper glucose levels, diabetic shock, diabetic coma, and with kidney stress and failure.

Please call the numbers below, and any other numbers you have for the Prison and the Governor. Along with Mumia's name his prison number is AM 8335 Call local news sources in your area that would report on this crisis. Share this email with your contact lists. Get out the information via any social media you use especially Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #MumiaMustLive.

Demand that prison officials call Mumia’s wife and his lawyer Bret Grote to discuss his condition. Demand that Mumia Abu-Jamal see a competent doctor immediately, that he be taken to the hospital for emergency care and not be left to go into a diabetic coma.

It is clear that Pennsylvania prison officials are intent on carrying out their plans to murder Mumia through medical neglect. This situation is urgent. Every call matters Every action matters. We need to be in the streets. Call your friends, your neighbors. We must speak out now before it’s too late.

This ‘Voice of the Voiceless’ has been a long time inspiration for our movement against racist oppression. This is why the forces of reaction want to kill him behind the prison walls. Let's do everything that we can to save our brother Mumia's life. A car caravan of pro-Mumia activists will be holding a protest at the PA Department of Corrections on April 3.

Mumia & Movement Are Under Attack:

We are under attack and we need every one's support in order to defeat this most recent assault. Tomorrow, Gov.Tom Corbett will hold a press conference at noon at 13th and Locust to announce the passing of "Revictimization Act." This recent legislation, which was fast tracked through the PA House and Senate last week will make it illegal for prisoners like Mumia Abu Jamal to speak publicly.
This is a clear violation of prisoner rights and a violation of the First Amendment.

Take a stand tomorrow with the Campaign to Bring Mumia Home,

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Prison Radio needs our urgent financial support within the next 72 hours to replace some vital machinery to carry out its important work.  Whenever the IAC has needed a recorded message of solidarity from Mumia on any struggle, Prison Radio has made it a top priority to have his voice present at demonstrations and meetings. Prison Radio has always been there for us giving voice to many political prisoners, known and unknown.  Let us be there for them. Please read the appeal and how you can give below.

for Prison Radio

If you ever thought of contributing and becoming a member - please do it right now.

We need to raise $1077 in the next 72 hours. Our Protools MBox died.  This is a four year old MBox 2 Protool hardware interface.  It is what we run on.

Late last night after talking with Mumia and recording, I loaded the sound and tried to produce the breaking news "California's Death Row: No More?" Mumia's commentary on The 9th Circuit Ruling.

After hours of reloading and rebooting every driver and diving down into the machine with tech support it was clear that the little green light on my beloved MBox was out for good.  The reason it is a big ticket $1077- is because the box is old -  we baby our equipment forever. The model has been discontinued; requiring a hardware and software upgrade.  It also means upgrading the professional WAVES restoration and musician bundle noise reduction bundle (we have waited to upgrade that for 9 years). I am working every angle and I have just ordered a used MiniMbox that just might work. Help us stay on time and on deadline and get these voices into the mix.

Thank you to everyone who clicks and gives.  We value your help.

Mumia has been transferred to general prison population
As of 1/27/12, Mumia Abu-Jamal has officially been transferred to General Prison Population after being held in Administrative Custody ("The Hole" or Solitary Confinement) at SCI Mahanoy, Frackville, PA for 7 weeks. This is the first time Mumia has been in General Population since his arrest in 1981.

This comes within hours of the of delivery of over 5,500 signed petitions to Department of Corrections headquarters in Camp Hill, PA and a compliant filed with the support of United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, Juan Mendez.

PLEASE NOTE that while this is a victory in transferring Mumia out of the torturous Restricted Housing Unit (RHU), we call upon the closure of ALL restricted housing units. Furthermore, we call upon the IMMEDIATE RELEASE of Mumia Abu-Jamal and are not disillusioned by this transfer.

Mumia's message to OWS
On Dec. 15, dictated while in Administrative Custody at SCI Manahoy in Frackville, PA.

My Friends of OWS,|

My message will have to be brief. But let not this brevity take from it, its strength.

You are the central movement of the hour. You're raising questions that are in the hearts of millions. Your motto, "We are the 99%," has been heard, heeded, and responded to by millions. You can be certain that the 1% have heard you clearest of all.

Your work, however, is just beginning. You must deepen, strengthen, and further your work until it truly reaches the 99%, almost all of us: workers, Black folk, Latinos and Latinas, LGBTs, immigrants, Asians, artists, all of us, for we are integral parts of the 99%. I salute you and hope fervently that you will grow beyond number.

Though I speak to you today by proxy, I'm confident that you will hear my voice soon.

Love, fun and music,
Mumia Abu-Jamal

Supreme Court ruling
on Mumia Abu-Jamal

Today the United States Supreme Court rejected a request from the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office to overturn the most recent federal appeals court decision declaring Mumia Abu-Jamal’s death sentence unconstitutional. The Court’s decision brings to an end nearly thirty years of litigation over the fairness of the sentencing hearing that resulted in Mr. Abu-Jamal’s being condemned to death. Mr. Abu-Jamal will be automatically sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole unless the District Attorney elects to seek another death sentence from a new jury.

The NAACP LDF and Professor Judith Ritter represent Mr. Abu-Jamal in the appeal of his conviction and death sentence for the 1981 murder of a police officer in Philadelphia. The Supreme Court’s decision marks the fourth time that the federal courts have found that Mr. Abu-Jamal’s sentencing jury was misled about the constitutionally mandated process for considering evidence supporting a life sentence.

“At long last, the profoundly troubling prospect of Mr. Abu-Jamal facing an execution that was produced by an unfair and unreliable penalty phase has been eliminated,” said John Payton, Director-Counsel of LDF. “Like all Americans, Mr. Abu-Jamal was entitled to a proper proceeding that takes into account the many substantial reasons why death was an inappropriate sentence.” Professor Ritter stated, “Our system should never condone an execution that stems from a trial in which the jury was improperly instructed on the law.”

Mr. Abu-Jamal’s case will now return to the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas for final sentencing.

Troy Anthony Davis
Troy was found guilty of murdering a police officer 19 years ago, based upon the testimony of 9 witnesses. Since then 7 of those 9 recanted their testimony entirely, and there are enormous problems with the testimony of the remaining 2 witness accounts. There is NO OTHER EVIDENCE. The murder weapon was never found. There was no DNA to test. Troy was killed by lethal injection on September 21, 2011.

A message from Troy Anthony Davis
To All:

I want to thank all of you for your efforts and dedication to Human Rights and Human Kindness, in the past year I have experienced such emotion, joy, sadness and never ending faith. It is because of all of you that I am alive today, as I look at my sister Martina I am marveled by the love she has for me and of course I worry about her and her health, but as she tells me she is the eldest and she will not back down from this fight to save my life and prove to the world that I am innocent of this terrible crime.

As I look at my mail from across the globe, from places I have never ever dreamed I would know about and people speaking languages and expressing cultures and religions I could only hope to one day see first hand. I am humbled by the emotion that fills my heart with overwhelming, overflowing Joy. I can't even explain the insurgence of emotion I feel when I try to express the strength I draw from you all, it compounds my faith and it shows me yet again that this is not a case about the death penalty, this is not a case about Troy Davis, this is a case about Justice and the Human Spirit to see Justice prevail.

I cannot answer all of your letters but I do read them all, I cannot see you all but I can imagine your faces, I cannot hear you speak but your letters take me to the far reaches of the world, I cannot touch you physically but I feel your warmth everyday I exist.

So Thank you and remember I am in a place where execution can only destroy your physical form but because of my faith in God, my family and all of you I have been spiritually free for some time and no matter what happens in the days, weeks to come, this Movement to end the death penalty, to seek true justice, to expose a system that fails to protect the innocent must be accelerated. There are so many more Troy Davis'. This fight to end the death penalty is not won or lost through me but through our strength to move forward and save every innocent person in captivity around the globe. We need to dismantle this Unjust system city by city, state by state and country by country.

I can't wait to Stand with you, no matter if that is in physical or spiritual form, I will one day be announcing,

Never Stop Fighting for Justice and We will Win!

Mumia Abu-Jamal’s 1982 Death Sentence is Again Declared Unconstitutional

4/26/11 release from: NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc.

(New York, NY) —The United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit has unanimously declared that Mumia Abu-Jamal’s death sentence is unconstitutional. In today’s decision, the Court of Appeals reaffirmed its 2008 finding that Mr. Abu-Jamal’s sentencing jury was misled about the process forconsidering evidence supporting a life sentence. The Court found that, in violation of the United States Supreme Court’s 1988 decision in Mills v. Maryland, the jury was improperly led to believe that that it could only consider unanimously agreed upon evidence favoring a life verdict.

This mistake rendered Mr. Abu-Jamal’s death sentence fundamentally unfair. The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) and Professor Judy Ritterof Widener Law School represent Mr. Abu-Jamal in this appeal of his 1982 conviction and death sentence for the murder of a police officer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

“This decision marks an important step forward in the struggle to correct the mistakes of an unfortunate chapter in Pennsylvania history,” said John Payton, Director-Counsel of LDF. “Again acknowledging the existence of clear constitutional error in Mr. Abu-Jamal’s trial, the Court of Appeals’ decision enhances confidence in the criminal justice system and helps to relegate the kind of unfairness on which this death sentence rested to the distant past.”

Prof. Ritter noted that, “Pennsylvania long ago abandoned the confusing and misleading instructions and verdict slip that were relied on in Mr. Abu-Jamal’s trial in order to prevent unfair and unjust death sentences. Courts now use clear and unambiguous language to advise sentencing juries about their ability to consider evidence that favors a life verdict. Mr. Abu-Jamal is entitled to no less constitutional protection.”

Mr. Abu-Jamal he has been on death row in Pennsylvania for 29 years.

More than 500 people rally on Tuesday, November 9 in Philadelphia
More than 500 people, mostly African Americans and youth, mobilized for a noontime outdoor rally Nov. 9 in support of Mumia Abu-Jamal. The rally lasted through a hearing of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals that argued on whether the death sentence would be reinstated against Mumia, who has maintained his innocence since being railroaded to death row in 1982. The court’s ruling will be announced at a later date. Supporters for Mumia included a delegation from the Transport Workers Union Local 100; Charles Barron, the New York gubernatorial candidate for the Freedom Party; Free Mumia Coalition (NYC), International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal and the International Action Center. From CNN
Washington (CNN) -- The Supreme Court has tossed out a lower court ruling that nullified the death sentence for former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal. He has been an outspoken activist from behind bars, claiming there were procedural errors during his capital sentencing, and that too few blacks were on the jury. Pennsylvania officials were appealing a federal court ruling on the sentencing question that went in Abu-Jamal's favor in 2008.

The justices made their announcement Monday, ordering a federal appeals court to revisit its earlier ruling granting a new sentencing hearing. The high court last year denied Abu-Jamal's separate petition for a new trial.

The appeals court now has the option of re-imposing the death sentence or ordering a new federal trial to hear other claims of injustice raised by Abu-Jamal.

We need your help again for justice for Mumia!

Dear Friends and Supporters of Mumia Abu-Jamal

The time has come to ante up for Mumia. We are writing to invite you to join our Civil Rights Investigation Campaign (CRIC) on behalf of Mumia Abu-Jamal with your checkbooks and credit cards. As many of you know, the campaign is urging the Justice Department to open an investigation into the decades-long violations of Mumia's civil rights. As you also know, Mumia recently suffered a setback when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled for the Philadelphia district attorney, vacating earlier rulings that had overturned the death penalty and granted a new sentencing-phase trial. Now, the Third Circuit Court will decide whether or not to execute Mumia without having a new sentencing trial. It's no exaggeration to say that Mumia's life is in grave danger — more than ever. Legal update on Mumia's case - Grave danger presists

Statement by Robert R. Bryan,
lead attorney of Mumia Abu-Jamal,
San Francisco:

Today, on Dec. 14, 2009, the U.S. Supreme Court has taken its last decisions for this year, taking X-mas holidays till January 11, the day it will officially resume its work.

Surprisingly, in the case of my client Mumia Abu-Jamal the Supreme Court hasn't yet taken a decision whether he will live and get a new jury trial determing his sentence, or whether he will die under the hands of the executioner. Actually, we had won a partial victory last year before the U.S. Appeals Court since the federal judges with their March 27, 2008 decision held out the prospect of a conversion of the death verdict into a life sentence. All the same, Mumia is still on death row because the prosecution filed an appeal wit the Supreme Court in order to push through his execution. Mumia is now in the greatest danger to be executed since his arrest on December 9, 1981.

Celebrate the release of On the Move – Sounds Inspired by
Mumia Abu-Jamal and tthe voices that have come together to
demand through words and song that Mumia Abu-Jamal be set free!

New York—On Aug. 21 the Solidarity Center here was filled with five hours of inspiring sounds: music and spoken word from talented artists (photo right) brought together to support the case of political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal, known worldwide as the “voice of the voiceless.”

Black Waxx Recordings and Artists and Activists United for Peace organized the celebration to officially release a powerful two-disc CD called “On the Move—Sounds Inspired by Mumia Abu-Jamal.” It aims to help raise broader awareness of the political significance of Mumia’s case and why he should be set free immediately after spending more than 27 years on Pennsylvania’s death row. Throughout the evening, the audience clapped, sang, cried and chanted during the performances. Some of the artists who lent their voices to the CD—such as Nana Soul, Stephanie Rice, SoSoon, Maya Azucena, Spiritchild, Latisha Devine, Melinda Davis and others—gave live performances. The acclaimed, legendary film director Melvin Van Peebles and Pam Africa from International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal gave special remarks. U-Savior Washington, a film director and a producer of the CD, presided over the program.

August 21 has been designated “Black August” because on this day, 38 years ago, Soledad Brother and Black Panther Party leader George Jackson was assassinated by prison guards in San Quentin prison.

NAACP:  Join the Campaign for a Civil Rights Investigation of the Case of Mumia Abu-Jamal

In 2004, the NAACP voted unanimously (with one "nay" vote) to "reiterate its support of the international movement for a new and fair trial for Mumia Abu-Jamal."  Yet the organization has done nothing since that time to ensure justice for Mumia. This April, the US Supreme Court ruled on Mumia Abu-Jamal's 27- year struggle against injustice and racism in the courts:  no new trial, no hearing, no opportunity for the mounds of evidence of Mumia's innocence to be presented, no recognition of the widely denounced violations of Mumia's constitutional rights, especiall, of racial bias.

RESULT:  Mumia will get either EXECUTION - What the State of PA. is seeking

Eric Holder and the Justice Department have the power to review Mumia's conviction and officially air the evidence that can overturn it!  The NAACP, as the oldest civil rights organization in this country, has to live up to its promise of 2004 and to its historic mandate.

Meeting will follow at 6:30 pm at St. Mary’s Church, 521 West 126th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam

The following call was sent out by the Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Coalition (NYC): We call on our elected officials to speak out on the threatened execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal Despite mounds of evidence of his innocence and ample legal basis for overturning his conviction, and after 27 years of police, prosecutorial, and judicial misconduct, Mumia has been denied a new trial by the U.S. Supreme Court. He now faces execution or life in prison without parole.

All indications are that the District Attorney of Philadelphia, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the media supporters of both will be relentless in continuing to seek Mumia’s execution. We are demanding that Attorney General Eric Holder conduct a civil rights investigation of this case based on the ongoing conspiracy to deny Mumia his constitutional rights.

The first video titled "New Evidence for Mumia" features Ramona Africa of MOVE, a solidarity message from Venezuela, a presentation at the crime scene by Journalists for Mumia focusing on alleged eye witness Robert Chobert's missing taxi and testimony from Billy Cook's trial, and most dramatically Pam Africa in front of DA Lynne Abraham's office detailing the different new evidence of both DA misconduct and Mumia's innocence. Africa focused particularly on the newly discovered crime scene photos that were suppressed by the DA in 1982 and 1995. Africa handed the new evidence to Civil Affairs Captain William Fisher for him to deliver to DA Abraham.

The second video titled "Youth for Mumia" is from the conclusion of the protest march in front of the Federal Court at 6th and Market, where Mumia's oral arguments took place on May 17, 2007. Legal update on Mumia Abu-Jamal

On July 7, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia filed a petition on the case of death-row political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. Robert R. Bryan, lead counsel for Abu-Jamal, submitted the petition on June 27 focusing on the racist exclusion of Black jurors during Abu-Jamal’s original trial in 1982.

Abu-Jamal was convicted of first degree murder of a white police officer on July 3, 1982, and has been fighting for the right to a new trial to prove his innocence. He was denied the right to legal representation at his trial and was railroaded to Pennsylvania’s death row due to his revolutionary politics.

If the Third Circuit rules against the petition, the next appeal will be sent to the U.S. Supreme Court.
